Style Focus: Colorblocking

6.13.2012 WRITTEN BY Ellie Style Guide, T+P Blog Central

I’m sure you’ve heard of colorblocking by now, but have you tried it? We know going bold with color can be a little intimidating, so we wanted to provide you with some resources to help demystify the colorblocking trend.

If you’re new to the concept, we highly suggest you watch this very informative video put together by blogger Kitty Cotten from Minneapolis.

Still not sure where to start? We asked Tog + Porter stylist Maureen for some expert advice.

“Start with your favorite bright base. Next, add a tonal yet contrasting color to really create a hue separation (for instance I’m mixing these Tog + Porter teal skinnies (just in!!) with my favorite navy blazer for some stylish sophistication).” After you’ve mastered that she suggests you take it a step further. “Maybe red with pink? Once you’re comfortable with the color mix, try something really bold like orange with purple.”

Maureen adds that colorblocking is a great way to not only brighten up your look, but also give new life to pieces already in your closet.  “Challenge yourself, pull out a piece you haven’t worn in a while and try to mix it with something you’ve worn too much – you will look fantastic and the pieces will feel fresh.”

Ready to start? Consider printing this colorwheel out and posting in your closet.

I’m inspired! Going to take the suggestion and go bold today with my favorite purple skinnies and an orange silk tank.
