Mother’s Day Tips from a Young Mom

5.05.2012 WRITTEN BY Ellie Just for Fun, T+P Blog Central

Hi, It’s Shannon Oertle, blogger at  11th and Shannon and fashion blogger here at Tog + Porter. I’m a young mom to the sweetest little two- year-old boy ever, Charley, and wife to my nerdy husband, Matt. Here’s my tips for Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day to me means celebrating family and spending time together. I love doing something with just the three of us, no distractions, just fun.

I can remember my favorite Mother’s Day as a child. In Michigan it was just getting warm enough during the day to wear jeans and a t-shirt. We went as a family, my dad, mom, younger brother and I to the sand dunes on Lake Michigan. We let the wind whip through our hair, enjoying the first real sunshine of spring. Afterwards we shopped the antique stores on Red Arrow Highway. We took our time, trying on silly outfits, old-fashioned hats, and spending time together. I found my first great thrifting find that day: an antique film projector with old black and white reels! I still have it. This year we have decided to start our own tradition as a family and go to the West Palm Beach Dixie Highway antique stores. Although our son, Charley might be a little young, he loves being out of the house and experiencing new things. We’ll put him in our baby carrier and be off for the day! I’m hoping to find one of these incredible vintage rattan hanging chairs for our bedroom, perfect beachy chic!

Other Ideas for Day Trips:

1. Pack a Picnic – I love this one! Throw some easy fruit and sandwiches in a basket (or better yet pick up a sub from a deli) and you are good to go! This idea is especially good if you have children who love to run around at the park!

2. Beach Day – Goes without saying, if you are near the ocean, spend some quality time at the beach together. Don’t forget to take pictures!

3. Let’s Go Fly A Kite – We did this one year for Father’s Day, but it’s equally fun for both holidays. Go buy a bunch of kites at the drugstore and let your kids go wild in an open field. Bonus if it’s actually windy.

(Dads, don’t forget the easiest gift certificate of all – a Tog + Porter gift card! It’s like giving her the perfect outfit without actually having to pick anything out.)
