How to Wear a Pencil Skirt

8.06.2013 WRITTEN BY Camilla How to Wear, Style Guide

Christian Dior first introduced the pencil skirt in the 1940’s and it became in instant classic. The slimming and ultra figure flattering skirt should be a staple in every woman’s wardrobe.

Pencil Skirt History_edited-1When wearing the pencil skirt, there are a few key Do’s and Don’ts to keep in mind:

DO pair it back to a slim fitting top or sweater.  Slim cut tops should be tucked in for a sleek effect. Sweaters can be worn out and should be on the longer side and accessorized with a skinny belt.

DO wear some type of a heel (try a small kitten heel if you aren’t a heel girl!) to accentuate the lines of the skirt. If you opt for a flat, try a nude one.  DO keep the hemline to the knee or just above the knee.  DO have a basic black skirt in your wardrobe as well as one in a bright hue – red anyone?

DON’T wear an oversized or flowy top with your pencil skirt. A full top detracts from the slimming effect and defeats the overall purpose of the skirt.

DON’T wear a long or bulky jacket. When pairing a jacket back to a pencil skirt, keep it cropped and slim.

DON’T go too short with the hemline – save the shorter hemlines for mini and skater skirts. The ideal and most flattering length for a pencil skirt falls right below the knee.
