A Colorful Revelation
For the first time in history, Pantone, the global source on color trends, bestowed a year two “Color(s) of the Year.” Perhaps it had something to do with the less than lackluster response to 2015’s Color of the Year, Marsala?
The two colors of 2016 are Rose Quartz and Serenity. Each color has its independent expression and significance, and an exceptionally when paired together. Rose Quartz is a soft tone that exudes warmth and happiness. It instills a sense of compassion and grace. Serenity is a fresh hue that radiates liberation and resilience. It provides respite and tranquility. When joined together, the pair emanates a unique balance. Imagine a beautiful sunrise–the promising warmth of the sun against an infinite sky that gives birth to a new day.
Pantone has a very systematic approach to declaring its Color(s) of the Year. Their reasoning goes beyond the fashion industry and incorporates social movements and cultural inspirations. Pantone says, “Color has always been an integral part of how a culture expresses the attitudes and emotions of the times.”
Pantone emphasizes how the combination of these two colors “challenges the traditional perceptions of color.” Referring to social growth, the joining of a (preconceived) feminine color with a masculine color suggests stimulation of gender equivalence. Our generation is focusing less on the partial verdicts once enveloped by society and more on the concept of expression.
The simplicity of the colors enables easy pairing with other mid-tones as well as taking the physical form of varying materials and finishes. Don’t be surprised if you see this color combination in interiors, as well as graphics.
